One Spark

Last night I went to my first training sessions to volunteer for One Spark. I was already excited about this event but being in the room while it was discussed amongst everyone really got me pumped! I am disappointed though that so many have yet to even hear of One Spark so I thought I'd take to my blog and fill you all in a little bit on what is is, how it will change the game *in my opinion, of course* and how amazing  it is that we are fortunate to host it right here in Jacksonville, FL AKA Duval!

One Spark is the world's FIRST ever crowdfunding festival and it will be FREE to attend. There has never been an event like this. The festival is being described as a mixture of kickstarter.com, ArtPrize in Grand Rapids and SXSW in Austin. If you are familiar with all of those it helps but if not let me break it down for you a little better.

From April 17 at 3pm to April 21 at 12pm the entire downtown area of Jacksonville, FL will become a non-stop festival of innovation, creativeness, technology and art. Over 55 downtown businesses will become hosts for over 450 creators. These creators will have their idea (invention, non-profit, business, project, etc.) on display. You can register to vote on the website ( www.beonespark.com ) once you have 'checked in' to the event on the app, mobile site or at a kiosk you can then vote on your favorite ideas. That Sunday it will be announced what amounts will be distributed to each creator for their project. You can vote for multiple creators but can only give 1 vote to each creator. The money will be distributed on a percentage basis so if you reach 10% of the votes you reach $25,000! How amazing is that?! So come out to see new inventions, sample new foods, watch live performances, hear amazing music and meet all the people who have worked hard to put it all together!

If you really like any project you see you can also donate money on your own through the app and the website. No creator will be selling anything! This will all be FREE. If you live in Jacksonville, FL there is NO reason you should not be in attendance to this unique event as it will bring so much to our city! There will also be an entertainment district for the evening hours.

I am excited to be on board to help with this event since you all know how much I love and support Jacksonville, FL and now maybe this festival can bring people from all over to see we have a beautiful city! Also remember there will be MAJOR investors walking this festival looking for the next IT thing to put their money into. Shad Khan (owner of our Jacksonville Jaguars) has even created a Stache fund to invest up to $1 million into some of these projects. If you have an idea then stay tuned to see how you can be a creator next year and please spread the word!!!

SN: The ONLY thing that cost anything are the live speaker sessions which is only $35 for a speaker pass and that gets you into any and all of the sessions. (It goes up to $50 after April 15)

Gluten-Free on I-95

I love traveling.. road trips, flying and even by boat. I just love to go. I didn't travel a lot as a kid.. Until I was 10 the only states I'd been to were my home state of Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia and Washington DC. By the time I'd graduated I had added North Carolina and Kentucky. I live in Florida now but my first time here was in 2002 and at 38 years of age I have only added South Carolina, Georgia, Texas, New York (airport only) and Connecticut to the list as well as The Bahamas (Freeport) and Cuba. I still have a million places I want to go.. Now though it's all a bit trickier because of my allergies.. I have been diagnosed as allergic to gluten, cats, pine trees and a few other things. I seem to have reactions to other things and need to be tested for more in addition to other health issues I have that food can complicate. This makes traveling HARD. I have to be careful at every place I go.. eating at events is completely out of the qu

Lost Dreams

It's 2011, times are tough and everyone is out here grinding to get to the top... So many have lost their jobs due to the recession and have to take jobs doing whatever comes their way just to have food on the table and a roof over their head. Not many really want to flip burgers or work the local department store register but if you want to survive we do what we have to do. It's how the country works... if there was noone flipping burgers, where would we get our food? What does this have to do with dreams? well a lot.... As a child one of the questions we are asked most often is what do you want to be when you grow up? Some ponder this and reply with whatever their mommy or daddy does, others reply doctor or fireman, some just don't know. We are told we can do anything! We can concure the world if we work hard, pay attention and try.. then real world hits... you gradute school and have more bills than zeros on your check, you get pregnant, or hurt yourself and lose a s

Baecation at Sunrise Painting

Have you ever heard a song and just saw a visual in your mind as you listened? During the COVID 19 Pandemic I have found myself painting even more. Having created my whole life I'd never painted actual paintings on canvas. My medium has primarily been wood and glass, learning as I go with no real teachings from anyone other than hours and hours of playing with my Gramma's paints or watching my Mom draw. When painting my first canvas piece of a sunrise last year I immediately knew I needed to paint more on canvas. I grew up at a time where music videos were EVERYTHING. The effects, guest appearances and story lines mattered. When most songs from my teen years start playing I immediately see the video in my head and think back to what was happening in my life at that time and the impacts the music and more made on me. That's what art does. It comes in so many forms but it is always a part of the times. After painting that first canvas I was riding in the car one day and th
